POSITION OVERVIEW This is a unique opportunity where the Analyst will play an impactful role with two VC funds at BDC Capital: The BDC IT Venture Fund manages over $300M in venture capital investments across Canada in early and mid-stage internet, mobile and enterprise companies with offices in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa with strong links to Silicon Valley in San Francisco. The Fund has become one of the most successful IT funds in Canada having won the Canadian Venture Capital Association deal of the year award three times. The team works very closely with the remaining 26 portfolio companies and uses their roles as Board members to assist in growing these companies through all stages to successful exits. The BDC Seed Fund manages an $80M fund with capital invested across Canada. The fund was designed to accelerate growth of the Canadian technology ecosystem by injecting capital at the grass roots level to graduates of incubators and accelerator programs. Over the last decade, BDC Seed Fund companies have gone on to raise $1B in capital and generated an outsized impact on the Canadian VC ecosystem. The current portfolio of companies ranges from seed-stage to growth-stage companies. The dedicated Seed Fund team works very closely with portfolio companies and uses its experience and expertise to assist in growing these companies through all stages to successful exits. CHALLENGES TO BE MET An exciting and varied position, the Analyst will work out of BDC Capitals Toronto office (hybrid office-home setup), supporting both the IT Venture Fund and the Seed Fund. The individual is expected to be a highly organized, motivated and enthusiastic self-starter who works on multiple initiatives with moderate supervision. Confident and positive, this individual is also high-energy, cultured, and capable of easily interacting with senior management at BDC Capital and portfolio companies alike. Flexibility and willingness to get involved in many different aspects of both funds is required; given no two days are ever the same in Venture Capital, flexibility of time and effort is paramount in order to be successful in this dynamic role. Duties Due-diligence support for investments in portfolio companies. This is a unique opportunity where investment support is required across a wide range of deal stages: Series B for the IT Venture Fund and late-Seed to growth stages for the Seed Fund. This individual will contribute to investment memos, support thorough review of financial models, lead competitive analysis, assessing macro trends, build comprehensive industry comparables and more. Supporting quantitative and qualitative analysis as required ranging from fund level analysis to portfolio company level analysis. A strategic mindset with the ability to think outside of the box and relaying thoughts into organized yet informative decks is important. Managing day-to-day activities of both funds: Upkeep of detailed dashboards, making sure all information is relevant and updated in order to support important fund-level decisions on an ongoing basis. Upkeep of updated investments, background checks and relevant paperwork with back-office. Research lead/support on industry trends and M&A activity as it relates to portfolio companies Valuation support bi-annually including data collection from portfolio companies, analyzing industry comparables, trends, M&A activity, tracking and reporting on metrics, monitoring investment portfolios, providing financial, forecasting and statistical analyses, identifying potential opportunities/issues. Influencing and mentoring University co-op students that rotate under our internship program with both funds every 4-8 months Network with peers across BDC Capital and VC Funds across North America. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Technical skills: One to three years of work/investment experience in or exposure to Venture Capital, Corporate Development, Investment Banking, Management Consulting, preferably involved with technology companies. Undergraduate degree in Business, Engineering or Computer Science; post-graduate degrees are an asset but not required. Advanced knowledge of Excel and the ability to produce well designed and professional looking PowerPoint presentations. Outstanding analytical skills, financial analysis, financial modeling, research and a keen ability to turn data into actionable insights. Essential and interpersonal skills: Strong intellectual curiosity and deep interest in early-stage technology startups/ecosystem; relevant experience within a startup or emerging technology company is an asset. Highly detailed oriented, organized, proactive and self-motivated. High EQ, outstanding communications skills, both written and verbal, strong team player Friendly and positive attitude, possessing strong networking skills and relationships in the start-up community. Demonstrated ability to produce and deliver clear and concise oral, written and PowerPoint presentations. Capability of taking on initiatives and an ability to work in teams, independently and/or remotely and within a small team environment.
